On the warm green edge of the forest, where the tall grass leaned gold in the morning sun, lived three young hare brothers who looked exactly alike — except for one bright difference.

Janek's ears and little tail were soft blue, Radek's were snowy white, and Sava's were sunny yellow, so their mother could always find them from clear across the meadow.

The brothers were small and round-cheeked, but they could do something wonderful: they could leap.
Janek jumped the highest, springing up as if he wanted to touch the clouds; Radek jumped the farthest, sailing over the grass in long, smooth arcs; and clever little Sava jumped in quick, tricky zig-zags that nobody could follow. That morning, as they nibbled the sweet clover, a long red shadow slid through the grass, and three pairs of ears went stiff and tall.
