About this story
The Dune That Kept a Lullaby is a gentle moonlit bedtime fairy tale about Mairin, a young desert fox with ears so large and attentive that she hears every tiny sound in the night desert. The older foxes think she listens to too many things at once, but one star-washed evening Mairin hears something no one else can hear: a soft lullaby humming from inside a silent dune.
When Runa, the lantern-keeper of a fading firefly caravan, arrives in a tremble of green light, Mairin learns that the caravan has lost the wind-song that guides them to Moonflower Hollow. To help them, she must stop forcing the dune to answer and begin listening with real patience. Deep beneath the sand, the old lullaby Eldora stirs like a golden seed, showing Mairin memories of fireflies, wind, and a song hidden away for safekeeping.
As a sudden ridge-wind scatters the caravan, Mairin discovers that her supposed distraction is actually her gift. She gathers the rhythm of beetle feet, clicking stones, soft sand, and firefly wings, then sings the pattern back to the wind. One by one, the fireflies find the rhythm again, and Mairin leads their green necklace of light safely through the dunes to the white moonflowers waiting in the blue dark.
